Restaurant Magnus Music Schedule
The Restaurant Magnus bar and stage area is a venue for live
music. Individual and small groups of local musicans play
Sunday through Thursday.
Full local, national and, on occassion, international musical
acts perform in the late evening on Fridays and Saturdays.
Most performances feature South American or Jazz music. For
a taste of what these musicians sound like, click on the links
in the text or on the pictures to take you to an individual
musician's web site.

SUNDAYS
- STEVEN MEYER
Every Sunday:
Steven Meyer, 7pm, no cover
Sunday nights at the Magnus just wouldn't be the same without
popular Steve Meyer. With a fun and upbeat stage presence,
Steve plays flamenco, bossa nova and jazz with flair and ornamentation.
He calls his first set "the coffee set" and the
second his "wine set".
A great way to close out the weekend is to come down to the
Magnus, order a couple tapas and listen to Steve play.
Steve has recently released his first CD "Steven Meyer
Plays Guitar". You can get copies of this at Steven

MONDAYS - TIM WHALEN OR DAVE STOLER
Dave Stoler and
Tim Whalen bring
their considerable skills, sensitivity and talent to Monday
evenings from 7-9pm.
Dave and Tim are both great improvisationalists and getting
to see them featured up close and personal as solists is a
wonderful treat. Check

You may know Alison from her star Jazz Ensemble that graces
the Magnus stage once a month on Friday and Saturday nights.
She is also a graduate level classical pianist who brings
her talents with pieces by Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Chopin
and Poulanc on alternate Tuesday evenings. Tim Whalen on Jazz
Piano and Dave Cooper on Trumpet is a rare treat to see these

Every Wednesday:
Scott Stenten, 7pm, no cover
Scott is virtuoso guitar player of multiple instruments
all played at the same time. You'll get to see him playing
two guitars at once. Double-necked guitars and his programmable
pedals all add to a show of subtle pyrotechnics.
THURSDAYS - FRANCESCA JOHNSON
Every other Thursday, Jazz Vocalist Francesca
Johnson with Peruvian guitarist Richardi Hirdener, 8pm-10pm,
no cover. Start the weekend early with a mix of swing,
bebop, hot, cool and modern jazz standards. 5/8, 5/22, 6/5,

Ryan is an accomplished saxophonist ever expanding
sounds that can come from it. Effervescent and intelligent
music that will keep you on the edge of your seat all night
long.

Gypsy Swing Trio, no cover. Chris and
Ed have a super tight groove showing they've spent countless
hours in the woodshed
working out intricate licks and duos that must be heard to
be believed. Always

Saturday, May 17th: Alison
Margaret Jazz Ensemble, 9:30pm, $5. There's gutsy joy
in Alison's voice, lyric on one phrase and dramatic on the
next. She'll chew you up, spit you out, and you'll feel like
a better person after it's all done.
Friday, May 23rd: Stellanovas
9:30pm NO COVER. With Chris in his pork pie hat on fiddle,
Mary Raines on the cello, this duo brings back the relaxed
entertainment of
the speakeasy. Great players.
  
Saturday, May 24th: X-String Quartet,
9:30pm, $5. Raquel Paraiso and Pancho Lopez, Authors of "A
Collection of Latin American Folk Songs" have put together
a quartet of South American string musicians to play Columbian
folk music. All acoustic and all tasty

May 31st: SPECIAL GUEST PERFORMANCE! Andreas
Kapsalis Trio, 9:30pm $7 cover The Andreas Kapsalis
Trio, whose home base is Chicago, has elements of Mediterranean,
Latin, Americana, Bubble gum, Middle Eastern and Flamenco
all rolled into a post Michael Hedges eight finger lead technique
that will leave you breathless. This is my "must see"
show pick of the month.

were so well received and had such a good time that this Chicago
band is back again for his second visit to the Restaurant
Magnus Stage. Fabulous, straight ahead saxophone led jazz.

Vicious got it going on with Klezmer revisited. They are plumb

horn, vocals, guitar, bass, mandolin, prima, drums and sometimes
theremin will get the joint a jumpin'. Show of the month!

Margulies, 9:30pm, $5 Lynette is aprime mover of Jazz
in the Madison area, was a member of "4 Chairs, No Waiting"
has played with local luminaries such as Ben Sidran, and in
2007 won the MAMA award for best female vocalist. She's
recently released a new CD "The Love of Life"
so we can probably expect some of these songs to be featured.

$5 The first time I saw this band, they had shown up to
the Weary Traveler Free House and asked if they might play
a few tunes. By the end of the first number, they had the
entire crowd swaying to the music and humming along to their
catchy tunes. By the end of the night, a few of the tables
and benches had heel and shoe marks from people dancing. What
a fun band for a summer night!

Alison is back from her honeymoon and ready to bring some
Hot August Nights to the stage of Restaurant Magnus, with
sultry singing, colorful piano, vibraphones and bass. We'll
have lots of cool drinks ready.
Saturday, August 2nd: John Lombardo and Swingtime
Music, 9:30pm, $5 Classic Jazz tunes artfully done
by musicians with the ears and chops to bring off even the
most difficult arrangements effortlessly. They have built
quite a following, so be sure to come a little early to get

9:30pm, nocover. Saboroso are a band out to have a lot
of fun. All acoustic, with too many percussion instruments
to mention, Kelly Mella on vocals, saxophone, and occasional
flute parts make up the instrumentation. With infectious grooves
made up of Brazilian samba and bossa nova, the night grooves
along like a minty mojito.

tackling jazz masterpieces with with wit and groove. In past
showings at the Magnus, BMC brought Miles Davis' "Birth
of the Cool" to life. Expect talented, tight playing from
this group of 6.

of the month. Formerly known as Goran Ivanovic Group, Eastern
Blok plays music that has all the power of seeing the train
heading out into the Siberian wilderness in Dr. Zhivago and
the speed of wild elves on midsummer's nights' eve. Words
just don't them justice. Listen to their "Balkan
Healer" from their new album"Folk Tales"
and you'll be mesmerized...oh yes you will...see you at the
show...see you at the show....prepare to be schooled...stunning

vocals)- Scott Beardsley of Lorenzo's Music fame- (drums,
yellin') get together a few times a month to just play the
songs we all grew up with. Absolutely everyone at this show
is going to be singing along, tapping their toes, and shouting
out for more. My pick of the month.

often, I've run out of new things to say. Polished, tight,
great swing music abounds with Chris and Ed. They are a musician's
musicians, that once you've seen them play, you either want
to quit music altogther or you're inspired to spend
the next 20 years practicing to get as good.
